The first half of a two-part series from 大问题Dialectic exploring the modern Chinese debate between "lying flat" (躺平 tang ping) and "involution" (内卷 nei juan) through the lens of classical philosophy. The core thesis: the desire to drop out of the rat race is not a modern internet trend -- it's a philosophical question as old as civilization itself.
The video examines three Hellenistic schools, each offering a different "degree of lying flat."
Cynicism: Complete Detachment (3/3 stars)
Diogenes lived in a large ceramic jar (pithos), owned nothing, and when Alexander the Great asked what he could do for him, replied: "Step aside -- you're blocking my sunlight."
- Physis vs Nomos (nature vs custom): The Cynics divided human needs into "natural/necessary" (eating when hungry) and "customary/unnecessary" (spending thousands at a Michelin restaurant for social validation)
- The diagnosis: The anxiety of involution comes from being hijacked by fake, socially constructed needs -- wealth, status, peer approval
- The cure: Abandon unnecessary desires entirely. Return to a natural state. Achieve true self-sufficiency and absolute freedom.
- Litmus test: "If I don't do this, will I actually suffer any real harm? If not, it's an unnecessary need."
Epicureanism: Half Lying Flat (2/3 stars)
Epicureans advocated for pleasure -- but not in the way most people think. True happiness is the absence of pain and a soul free from disturbance, not endless consumption.
- Atomism and death: Human anxiety is fundamentally driven by the fear of death. Since we are just atoms, death is merely atoms dispersing -- "death cannot hurt us"
- The cure: Once you overcome the fear of death, the desperate urge to achieve worldly success dissolves. True happiness comes from philosophical contemplation, simple living with friends, and avoiding intense sensory pleasures that ultimately lead to emptiness.
- Marx connection: Karl Marx's doctoral dissertation was about Epicurean atomism -- a direct lineage between this ancient "lying flat" philosophy and modern materialism.
Stoicism: Lying While Rolling (1/3 stars)
Stoics don't require you to drop out of society. You're allowed to participate and work hard. But whether you succeed or fail is up to fate.
- Cosmic script: The universe is governed by a divine, rational order. Everything that happens is predetermined. We are tiny actors in a grand cosmic play.
- Inner peace regardless of outcome: Do your job without letting hope, expectation, or anger control your emotions. If you fail, accept it calmly; if you succeed, remain humble.
- Cleanthes (quoted by Seneca): "The willing are led by fate, the reluctant are dragged."
- Hegel (via Engels): "Freedom is the recognition of necessity" (自由就是对必然性的认识) -- true freedom comes not from changing the world, but from aligning your mind with it.
Why These Schools Emerged
The key historical insight: all three schools arose during the Hellenistic period, after massive empires (Macedonian, Roman) conquered the Greek city-states. When individuals suddenly found themselves powerless in a vast, impersonal empire, philosophers turned inward -- developing philosophies focused on personal ethics, inner peace, and small, controllable joys.
The parallel to today's "involution" culture is hard to miss.
